Stray Animals

If you have found an animal, you may bring it to the shelter during regular hours or you may call animal control in your area.

Animal Control:

Augusta County: 540.245.5635
Staunton: 540.332.3842
Waynesboro: 540.942.6548

There is a $15 fee for dog surrenders, a $10 fee per cat, $20 per kitten litter with mother, and $15 per litter without mother.

If you do not want to bring the animal into the shelter, you must advertise the animal as found for a period of 10 days. If an owner cannot be located at the end of that time, you may keep him or find a new forever home for that animal.

Animals are kept for a period of 5-10 days and then evaluated for temperament and health before becoming available for adoption. Owners may claim their animals by contacting the shelter, and then paying the appropriate fine at the appropriate facility. Animals brought in by Staunton and Waynesboro will need to be paid at the Police Departments and animals brought in by Augusta County will need to be paid at the Augusta County Government Center to the Treasurer.

Stray animals can be viewed in our Lost/Found/Stray Database online at all times. If you need to inquire about an animal you have seen online, please have the ID number when calling.

Found animals can be posted on our Lost and Found Facebook page.
